UPCOMING EVENTS:
June 21, 2013: Summer Vacation begins! Have a wonderful time with free books from the Public Library, do all kinds of writing, play the math games and be a scientist and an engineer!
Notice how and why your shadow changes each day.
With your family enjoy looking at the night sky.
Play outside and breathe the fresh air on our "Goldilocks" planet that is just the right distance from our star, the Sun!
Compare an earthworm from outside with the one you studied from our class worm farm.
Compare an earthworm with an insect. Observe their size, color, shape and how they move.
Do they prefer the light or the dark? What else do you notice?
Compare an earthworm with a spider!
Enjoy reading your new copy of Charlotte's Web. What could really happen in the story? Why? What is definitely fiction? How do you know?
Select recycled waterproof materials such as milk cartons. Then design, build and test a boat.
Think of a real life problem and design and make an invention to solve it.
Measure everything! Draw and write about what you discover.
Happy Summer!
A very "BIG THANK YOU" to all our parents for all the support that you give so generously at the Boat Regatta, field day, on fieldtrips and for our school and home learning. Our most recent fieldtrip to Penfield Farm was spectacular! The children decided that the sheep and lambs were their favorites ahead of the chickens and chicks. All the animals received some votes including the horses, the cattle, the emus and the llama! Prior to the fieldtrip the students built their own farms to provide for their model animals' needs with water, grain, hay, shelter and safe fencing! Thank you again, parents, for all your help on the fieldtrip to see a real farming community.
Please remember our school policy that "Healthy children learn better!" Fresh fruit or vegetables are perfectsnacks and there is a drinking fountain filled with cool, refreshing water near our classroom. At home observe your SHADOW? How is it changing ? Is it growing longer or shorter? Are our days becoming longer or shorter? How does your shadow change during the day? When is it longer? When is it shorter? What do you notice about the position of the sun? What is your recipe to make a shadow? What is needed to make a shadow? Where will you put the 'ingredients' that you can move?
Welcome to our ONE-derful world, first grade at EHGEMS! This is such an exciting and special year for learning and for making new friends. We use the Responsive Classroom curriculum to create a safe, happy, learning community. An integral part of this is regular visits to the senior citizens to read and to celebrate our learning with plays and music. During the year we help children with disabilities in Haiti, and we also we work closely with our grade four buddies.
Mystic Aquarium, Belltown Orchard, and Portland Farm provide great settings for our young scientists to engage in authentic learning. Other visitors often comment on how impressed they are to see our first graders recording their observations in their science journals. In the fall the children plant Red Emperor tulip bulbs and then they wait, expectantly, to observe the coming of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. This is part of the international Project North study.
There is so much to explore in our wonderful world and to share our discoveries in English, Japanese and the language of mathematics.
Mrs. Mroz is happy to meet with parents before or after school.
